Being one who has considered the "montana" peak a bit "over-defined" as a bash style, as if the tight crimp of the Span-Am War/Frontier Army era was not extreme in its own fashion, I got this image off the internet of a a US Army Air Service group shot circa 1918 (?).

Good felt hats - and the army issue ones were very good - were and are expensive. A lot of old-timers wore the hat they had and the hat they had was the one issued to them when they were in the army.

Fonda's style of hat in 'My Darling Clementine' is what is known as an 'Oreana' ...2 front dents & a mule kick in the rear. Costner's hat in 'Open Range' was a similar style.

WEBSep 9, 2008 · Probably a brim 3" or less in width and a 5" crown. This Open Road has an Oreanna crease. Not a Montana Peak but you get the idea. 3' brim and a 5" crown. I think this would work fine witha 4" brim as long as the crown isn't too tall. It's about proportions. This 15X Buckskin Resistol has a 4" brim and a 7 1/2" crown.

Use of private purchase hats was quite common in the US Army, and they started to show up in the American Army as a private purchase item about that time.

Early campaign hats on the other hand, from the Indian wars to Spanish-American war were wide brim slouch type hats, usually with a deep center crease and side dents.
