Edinburgh Airport (EDI) is about 33 miles away via the M9. Glasgow (GLA) is about 40 miles away via the M80. It is probably more of a personal choice depending on where you are planning on staying. I like EDI better to fly in and out of, but travel time, it is not that much of a difference. You will enjoy it regardless of how you get there.

Over and above looking at the website, I will provide a practical answer. Whist there are some provisions made, and I have to be honest, some aspects of getting around the steep steps, corners and tight spaces would be challenging, not possible in some cases (depending on individual abilities). It is after all a castle and there are limited options to make it more accessible. I don't wish to make it sounds negative, and it is certainly still 100% worth a visit, just be prepared that that it may be challenging for some.

At that age they will probably get bored and tire quickly but there is plenty of space for them to run around. There are a few particular things they might like such as visiting the kitchens which have been recreated with mannequins as well as visit some of the rooms where the tour guides are dressed in character. Also check out Stirling Castle's website for ideas on things to do with them. And good luck! :)

If you are pushed for time an hour will do but 2 hours is better. But this also depends on the weather as we wandered around outside in glorious sunshine. You may not spend so much time looking at views if its raining.
