The best thing about this beach is its location in Kailua-Kona close to lots of lodging, food, and activities. The water tends to be very rough here, and the beach is very small so it gets crowded e… Full review by kristyg624

Good for a quick dip in the ocean. The beach is sandy but has a lot of volcanic rocks. The waves are gentle. Has showers and toilets and a life guard station. Full review by Marilyn M

We were just there. I was disappointed. We took a hop on/ hop off bus that took you to about 7 different stops. White sands beach was one. The bus was $20 pp ( we are a family if 4). There was no white sand there at all. The sand was black and the beach was covered in rocks. We didnt bring water shoes, we were expecting a nice beach. Lots of little crabs hide in the rocks. My kids were too nervous to even go in the water. Yes, they had washrooms, but very dirty. I was not impressed. Waste of $80.
How busy would I expect White Sand beach or Kona to be in mid May? I am not wanting to go to Hawaii during the peak busy times and it seems May may be a fairly good time. Please advise, thanks!

Kona is gorgeous in Mid May. Peak busy time in Kona is Ironman in October. Otherwise, Big Island is an uncrowded kind of place. Aloha!
