Verizon has confirmed an outage affecting some of its mobile phone users that sparked a flurry of complaints on social media about disruptions to placing calls and accessing the internet.

People in multiple cities posted about issues they were having, with many saying their phones were in "SOS" mode.

Verizon mobile customers reported widespread outages across the US on Monday. Starting at around 9:30AM ET, hundreds of thousands of people flagged issues with their mobile service on Downdetector, which tracks user-submitted outage reports.

Verizon customers reported their mobile phone service wasn't working in cities across the U.S., giving them only SOS mode.

Verizon said Monday afternoon that it was "making progress" and starting the process of restoring service after an outage left many in SOS mode.

Around 13,000 customers are still without service according to Downdetector. That's down from 104,000 earlier Monday.
