Workers at six grain terminals in the Canadian port of Vancouver have reached a tentative deal on September 27, ending a strike potentially impacting exports from the world's top canola and number three wheat exporter during the harvesting period.

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA — A tentative labor agreement has been reached between the Grain Workers Union (GWU) Local 333 and Vancouver Terminal Elevators’ Association (VTEA) after workers went on strike at the Port of Vancouver Sept. 24.

Grain workers at Canada’s biggest port went on strike Tuesday over a dispute regarding hours and pay, setting up what an industry association called a “devastating” situation for farmers during the harvest season.

An industry group representing Manitoba's farmers is worried Canada's position as a reliable grain supplier might be tarnished after operations at one of the busiest ports for bulk grain export came to a halt on Tuesday.

Canada's labour minister says striking grain terminal workers in Metro Vancouver and their employers have reached a tentative labour deal. Steven MacKinnon announced the agreement between Grain Workers Union Local 333 and the Vancouver Terminal Elevators’ Association in a post on social media platform X,

Grain terminal workers at the Port of Vancouver started returning to work on Saturday, Sept. 28 following a tentative agreement to end a four-day strike that disrupted crop exports during the critical harvest season.

The work stoppage affected six terminals at Port of Vancouver that are critical for exports of canola, wheat, barley and other grains from Canada’s prairies.
