Apr 20, 2013 · I must have checked 200 Elm trees today and no sign of morels yet, must be too early. Is it probable that even though i have an area with numerous Elm trees there may not be any morels at all. I see may apples about half staff and lots of wild chives , but no morels!

May 7, 2013 · I used to hunt morels as a boy. Now I'm back in the midwest and I'm excited about morel season. Didn't find any last year, haven't found any this year. Half the time I'm trying to figure out what a damn elm tree looks like.

May 10, 2014 · The only elm trees we have around here that I know of are called Chinese Elm. I'm wondering if there is a difference if morels will grow around Chinese elm trees? Any knowledge you could share on this would be very much appreciated

That figure seems very high to me, and certainly has not been the norm for me, even in a bad year. Of course, I don't count the trees, but I feel one in 20 - 40 trees would be more representative.

Apr 15, 2019 · Elm - When the bark is about to slough off is when I start to keep an eye out. Ash- Living, macroscopically healthy, trees. Apples- Seems I have the best luck with half dead/ half live specimens. Always seems to be Ash around said trees. My brother believes that the Apple/Ash combination is the most conducive to our favorite fungi.

Apr 30, 2014 · Check those stumps when morel time hits. I once found 240 grays around the stump of a huge old elm that had been cut down the previous fall. If you know of any hawthorne/thornapple trees, check those. They are decent producers in some years. In general, stay away from oak-dominant areas. Big stands of old oak trees are super-low probability spots.

Mar 6, 2021 · So, they can produce seeds which can sprout into young elms, and I've actually found some. Never found morels near any of the young ones though. It is thought by some that since morels have mycorrhizal relationships with elm, and other, trees that they can sense when the tree gets in trouble and that causes them to flush.

Apr 6, 2018 · Tulip poplar groves are great. No just one or two here and there but 50-100 is a great start. Dying Slippery Elm are the best. Apple trees are great although I checked every apple tree I know of for 4 years in a row and have only found about 1/2 a dozen. Then I drive by houses with apple trees in their yard and sure enough morels everywhere!!
