A lean to also lets you "be in the woods" a little more, at least to me. We used to carry a light tarp for rain protection on short and not too high elevation mountaineering trips and they worked ok.

I have a canvas lean-to, then I have a 12' x 16' canvas duct fly that runs about half way down the back, over the top and makes about an 8' front awning. It looks like a Welen lean-to with a long awning. Very comfortable and dry.

WEBSep 4, 2012 · The first time I was in the shelter during a rain it came directly from the south! The front overhang helped, but rain still blew back in a little bit. In conclusion, a lean-to shelter is a compromise: pitch its back to the wind the best you can, but don't expect to be 100% dry in changing or driving wind conditions.
